Even though Prismata is still in alpha, there’s quite a few players that have made their way to Pro status. I’ll start this series of pro-files highlighting them with a player I noticed doing pretty well in the Masters League and putting in a lot of practice time with the new units, Kurasu.
Real Name: Klas Almrot
Location: Gothenburg, Sweden.
Age: 28 years old.
Vocation: A student/part time worker, studying Chinese.
How long have you been playing?
Since November 2014, so about 8 months.
How did you discover Prismata?
I was playing some other card games (Infinity Wars and Hearthstone) and a friend from there gave me a key.
Are you a pretty competitive guy or just play for the learning?
I am competitive.
How does Prismata compare with the other games you play?
I am from a Go background originally, and Prismata has more similarities with that, so I really liked it from the start. Go is more complex, but you have to “read” out moves like in Go and unlike card games like Hearthstone/IW where there is a lot of probability involved. I used to play MtG a lot too, but it’s too expensive. HS was fun for a while but it lacks depth.
I was at the world amateur Go championship 3 weeks ago. I was like 20th out of 57 or so. It was a decent result for me.
Do you play Go with any other Prismata players?
I played one game with Synx, his first game, I won :O
What do you think of the Breach Party event?
Today was patch day so it’s extra fun. It’s not that often that you go breach proof, so it adds a lot of new stuff to figure out. Playing it more makes me learn when it works, and doesn’t, etc.
What do you think of the new units?
Dynamo is really good. Tantalum Ray also very useful unit. The Patroller is a decent unit, but not on the level of the other two.
Do you think Dynamo is too good?
I could see it needing some tweaking, no broken combos yet though. Just get all the Dynamos. I’ve gotten 3-4 dynamos every set, and it’s only 4 supply. I’ve played some games where I burned out all the supplies except the Tarsiers I think. It’s really hard to know what to kill at that point. If you go for the dynamos you might get overwhelmed by damage, but if you don’t they will make more units till they run out.
Prismata in general
What do you think about Prismata’s monetization model?
Seems like the right approach. I spent some money on dota/csgo skins, so I will probably spend some money on Prismata. I backed the kickstarter too. I’ve been hooked on this game for over 6 months so I want to help out.
Do you think Prismata is too deterministic/linear for long term depth and staying power?
If they keep making new units then yeah, maybe not like Go that has been around for thousands of years, but you know.
Do you think there’s enough complex interaction between the units themselves?
Yeah there is. Like the defense puzzles. Those situations can come up in a game, and you will just never know you missed lethal 😛
Do you think Prismata needs a match chat instead of just global?
I think emotes are enough.
Do you often chat with your opponent in global or elsewhere?
No. I rarely chat in global, or with opponents.
Any custom emotes you’d want?
I petitioned to get a “Synx claimed my heart” emote, but it was denied. Nazi devs. I don’t care much for emotes, skins look cool though.
Favorite skin set so far?
The Natural one looked nice. An Ossified skin set would be cool too.
Would you want to mix and match or just mono-skin?
I dunno, maybe I could have a set bonus like in diablo.
What kind of bonus would it be?
Drones +1 hp.
Do you think the monetization model will be enough?
Yes, if they get enough players interested in the game.
Do you try and convert Go/HS players?
Yeah I’ve converted a few. Most don’t get hooked though.
Why do you think that is?
Needs more stuff finished i guess. Retention features, achievements and shit. Most people won’t think it’s fun until they learn.
Suggestions for people trying to learn?
Watch streams, ask some good players for advice, play games.
A a good player, do you have some good general advice to start with?
Don’t over drone. Sometimes I see new players being ahead on drones, and they don’t get enough tech. So they can’t spend their gold, so they buy more drones. Being ahead on drones by a little can be very good, but then your goal should be catching up on attack. Also there is some very easy tactical stuff you can learn, like when to keep a rhino back.
Basically you can spot a granularity weakness like this:
If your opponents defenders can add up to 1-2-3-4 etc then he is not exploitable, but if he has one engi and one wall it cant add up to 2 right? So then you exploit it by attacking for 2+1 less than his defense. If you just spot the weakness, then it’s easy to find how to gain value. Like, oh this rhino can stay back and he loses the same stuff, so you gain something. If opponent only has even number defenders, if you attack for even he will absorb for at least one less than maximum. Ex: grid(4) and forcefield(2). Attack for 4 and he absorbs 2 instead of max which is 3.
Are you pretty good at mathing stuff out?
Yes. I’m a pretty smart guy 😛 I do it all in my head.
Do you have your openings down pretty well then?
Any favorite openings you can share?
Hmm. I always like Xeno opening as player 2 (dd/ ddc/ ddb/ ddx). After you get the Xeno you can choose whatever you want as attacker. You can get double animus or econ up more, very smooth build.
Any favorite units?
Hellhound, Doomed Mech, and Centurion.
Favorite tech color?
Green, green is flexible and has some of the best units.
Do you prefer being P2 then for the easier conduit opening?
Do you think the game is pretty well balanced in terms of P1/P2 advantage at the moment?
Well some sets will always be advantaged for one player, but it doesn’t bother me so much. I like trying to win the set even if i know I’m disadvantaged, but if you lose you can just brush it off as a P1/2 set and go to the next one.
Do you think the heavy math based look ahead in this game prevents people who aren’t as good at that sort of thing?
Probably, I think the casual HS crowd can’t get into it very easily.
What do you think could help with that?
Campaign will help I think. It’s a bit overwhelming for new players with all the units.
How did you go about learning the game?
I just played a bunch, then i started streaming it a bit and got help in the chat from good players.
Any particular players you’d like to mention/thank for the help?
bearsuit maybe 😛 We are on the same team now. Feels gud. We just need people to stop dodging us.
Has the student become the master?
I think I surpassed him yeah 😛 He can pull off some good stuff but he doesn’t play as much as the others on the team. He has an addiction problem, World of Warcraft t.t, raids and shit.
Do you use the replay system to analyze your matches ever?
Almost never. I can usually tell where i went wrong, so no need to play it out again.
Do you spend much time analyzing your mistakes after a match?
In Prismata I don’t. Go is different because there are so many more choices. In Prismata the mistake might be just getting attack too late for example, or cutting too many drones, so it’s more simple that way.
Do you have a general kind of strategy you follow?
Basically looking at the set you want to determine how much econ you want, and that depends on how good the attackers/defenders are. More defense = more econ. From there you choose your opening.
After opening, does the game usually go the direction you anticipated?
Not always, but usually i can tell.
How much do you react to your opponent vs focusing on your own plan?
I play more reactive than most people i think. I play/talk with Synx a lot, and he is very much the other way.
How you feeling about that tournament so far?
I should win my group I think. So it feels good.
What do you think about the tournament format?
It’s good, best so far. I like that individual games count.
Were there any matches so far that were especially memorable?
What speed setting do you prefer?
45s is fine, but i get really impatient when players spend their extra time on turn 1 and 2.
Do you ever watch the PrismataMasters casts of it?
Yeah I’m half watching now. Sometimes I watch the VOD of my matches, to hear the commentary 😛
Do you think the commentary is usually pretty good?
Yes, Celerity is always good.
Have you done any commentating yourself?
Yeah, but not this season, it’s usually quite late for us euros.
Is it something you will do more of in the future?
Yeah, I might host some stuff on my stream, maybe some king of the hill type matches.
