For this pro-file, I spoke with another newer player who made it into Masters League without being on a team, dirtymagic!
Real Name: Mark Fricke
Location: Hamburg, Germany
Vocation: Process Engineering Student
Prismata in general
I have been playing since January 2015.
How’d you find out about the game?
They were doing the Prismata cup and I applied after seeing Prismata on a Hearthstone Stream.
What interested you about Prismata?
I don’t know. It looked like fun. Having no RNG and playing a different set of units every game.
Were you an active Hearthstone player at the time?
Only at the first ~5 Hearthstone seasons. Hearthstone gets boring after a while. I wasn’t playing that much Hearthstone when i saw Prismata for the first time.
What other games do you play?
Didn’t play a lot of games this year. A few hours Path of Exile that’s pretty much it.
About how much do you play Prismata on average?
I played about 2k games in total. Maybe half of those games are vs Bots.
Do you still play against the bot?
Yes. Doing the daily quest or testing a set without analyse mode.
Are you testing entire random sets, or just picking some specific units and the rest random?
It depends. Most of the time I use random sets. If I find an interesting combination of units I will use Analyse mode to find different/the best lines.
Do you test for both player 1 and 2?
Usually only 1 player since green favors p2 and high econ p1.
Do you find mirror games in matches interesting?
No. But there are some exceptions. Things like gambits can make mirror games interesting.
Any examples of a particular interesting unit combination you’ve played with in Analyze mode?
Pre-nerf Tatsu + Nitrocybe. Although I have a lot of games vs bots I still prefer playing over using the analyzer. During games I don’t use analyse mode at all.
Do you find it helpful or annoying to have to play as both sides in Analyze mode?
It’s annoying. But the biggest advantage of Analyse mode is the ability to go back a turn. This helps correcting mistakes without being forced to play the game again.
Playing with others
Are there any other players you practice with in custom games (non-Arena) ?
I play some friendly games vs other players but I don’t pratice with any of them on a regular basis. Pretty much any high ranked player will play some games if he has the time. To just name 3 players who help other players to get better at the game: Arkanishu, iband and Synx.
Do they discuss losses with you to help you learn from your mistakes?
They point out mistakes and give their own opinion on the set.
Do you watch Twitch streams?
Occasionally. Usually doing something else at the same time.
Do you stream at all yourself?
I streamed like 1 or 2 hours Prismata. But the quality is not the best since I am streaming from a Laptop. Furthermore it didn’t help me getting better at the game and I don’t know if I want to stream just for entertainment.
Do you ever watch the Prismata Masters stream of your matches for the commentary?
I did watch some of them, but this doesn’t really help you to find the winning strategy. Commentators can only point out mistakes but they can’t tell you which play would have won the game.
Have you done any commentating?
Is it something you enjoy doing?
It’s fine however there are other players who are better at commentating than me.
How do you feel about the Summer Masters Tournament so far?
I advanced further than I expected considering quality of the competition.
Are you planning on playing in the Fall Masters or Prismata World Championship?
If I find the time to play on these days I will probably play.
Learning the game
How did you go about learning the game when you first started?
I played the demo version. After getting into the Alpha I just started playing on the ladder. During my first ~10 games I always used the same openers. Turn 2 Animus as Player 2(dd ad) and Triple Engineer as Player 1 (dd dde ddd).
Why use the same openers?
They worked really well in the demo and I had no idea how to play this game.
Did you learn from any resources outside the game, or just play against people and the bot until you figured it out?
Just playing. Prismata still needs a better tutorial which helps new players. The campaign at the moment is more a collection of puzzles and doesn’t help you to survive on the ladder.
Any advice for players looking to learn the game while that’s still in the works?
To learn the Basics you can just try to beat Master Bot. Dave Churchill already improved the Prismata AI by a lot. It will probably get even better in the future. But if you can consistently beat Master Bot the best way to improve is to play vs better players. Just ask me or other Tier X players for help.
About how long did it take you to get to Tier X?
I don’t remember. Probably a few weeks.
Future of Prismata
What do you think of the current version of the Arena rewards system?
It has some minor issues but overall it’s fine. Participation gives no rewards only winning does and I’m not sure if the rarity scaling is perfectly tuned.
Does it motivate you to play more?
I don’t care that much about skins and emotes. There are some nice skins, but I don’t think these are the main reason for me to play Prismata.
Any ideas for what Lunarch could do to get you to spend money?
I don’t know. I would rather buy the Prismata game once than pay for microtransactions.
Did you purchase a founder pack?
Not yet. I like the idea of supporting the devs but the perks are not that appealing to me.
What do you think about the future of the game in general?
The Steam release will bring a lot of new players into the game. But I don’t think prismata will get even close to the size of big F2P games like Hearthstone, LoL,DoTA etc.
Do you think the game will be able to remain interesting for a long time as long as they keep tweaking/adding units?
If tweaking/adding units changes the game enough it can remain interesting. Maybe they can add a ban/pick system. They can do much more on the non-competitive part of the game. I think they already planned raids.
Are you interested in more single player content then?
I think single player content is limited to puzzles. I would rather see a non-competitive mode where both players start with different starting units ( like having more or less Drones, or starting with a tech building etc).
Meaning not ranked?
Yes not ranked. Since it would create more balance issues. At the moment player 2 has an easier time to get a conduit. Problems like this would increase if you change the amount of starting drones.
Do you think the asymmetry between player 1 and player 2 results in autowins as mentioned by other players? If so do you think this is a serious issue that needs to be addressed somehow?
Autowins are actually really rare. But one player can have an advantage in a set. You can not address this issue since one of the two players has to go first. Imagine both players have the same starting units and go for the same build, as a consequence player 2 is always 1/2 turn behind.
Do you think there’s any good way to address this advantage in tournament formats?
I can’t think of any good ways to solve this problem. Letting players play a set 2 times, 1 time as player 1 and 1 time as player 2, creates even bigger problems like copying previous builds.
Any final thoughts?
Thanks for having me here and a shout out to the Masters League players.
