Galvani Drone is an interesting drone alternative that depends heavily on how you use engineers and defend yourself. It’s benefit is it’s extremely low cost, which unlike a normal drone, can basically pay for itself (assuming you have the energy to spare) in 1 turn! The big downsides are that it’s a 1 hp frontline unit, and that it is useless without energy as it can’t even block.
Using this Drone correctly will definitely require some finesse. It’s dependency on energy and inability to block means your engineers become a much juicer target for your opponent than even this as a frontline unit.
Here’s a few reasons why killing an engineer is much more effective than killing Galvani
- Engineers cost 2 gold vs 1 gold for Galvani
- If you only have 1 Engineer/Galvani, it also costs the gold that Galvani could have produced next turn
- Engineers provide defensive granularity, Galvani’s provide no defense!
As you can see, having Galvani in the set actually increases the cost of using your Engineers on defense. The frontline can act as a good trap to waste the time of players who don’t understand the math though! Luckily either way, it’s pretty common to have lots of extra Engineers you’d normally build for defense anyways.
Unit synergies and anti-synergies with Galvani Drone
This is the clearest unit synergy with Galvani as it leaves you with a ton of Engineers yet doesn’t require using their energy for anything! Here’s an example reddit thread demonstrating.
Hellhounds are another clear synergy with Galvani as they will create an Engineer immediately and can probably be bought the same turn as a Galvani.
Sentinel is often a difficult unit to use correctly, but it definitely provides more value in Galvani units as it constructs up to 4 Engineers without really asking for anything in return for them. Due to the low cost of the Galvani Drone, it should be pretty easy to build those on the same turns you make Engineers with your Sentinel. Just make sure you have 1 spare Energy to buy the Galvani!
Cauterizer may seem like a bit of an anti-synergy at first, because it needs Energy to fire. The upside of using him along with Galvani though, is he will pop out 4 Engineers on purchase which you could use with your Galvani. This makes it even more of a bad decision for your opponent to target the Frontline Galvani as you can then switch the excess Energy to being used for attack for Cauterizer or Electrovores. Using Cauterizer with Galvani’s though is pretty difficult and not recommended most of the time.
Tesla Coil is also a little bit of an anti-synergy since it consumes Engineers. Much like Cauterizer it has the upside of creating 3 Engineers upon purchase which can be used with your drones. This can be much more effective when working with Galvani than Cauterizer though, as the Tesla only consumes 1 Engineer a turn while giving you 3 free. This again puts much higher value on your Engineers and can be pretty risky.
Ebb Turbine only provides a light synergy with Galvani in that it’s click ability provides an energy which normally might be wasted, that can potentially be used for 1 extra gold on a turn when you were short on Engineers to power your Galvani. It’s a small thing, but efficiency matters!
Fission Turret only provides a little synergy in that you are likely to have a lot of Engineers when using Galvani Drones. This means that if you have some spare because of Galvani dying, or just want to trade 3 gold for 3 green on Fission Turret’s last turn, you can do so.
